One of Ottawa’s newest restaurants, we welcome you to a delicious one-night event featuring Chef Hemant Bhagwani of EkBar.
The Inspiration: India x Portugal
Goa is a place where food feels deeply personal, shaped by time, memory, and a cultural layering unlike anywhere else in India. During Chef Hemant’s six-month stay, he experienced how the same dish could take on entirely different expressions depending on the home, the cook, and the moment.
Cooking alongside four generations of women in a single household, from great-grandmother to great-granddaughter, he witnessed the evolution of a dish through ingredients, instinct, technique, and perspective, where even the smallest subtleties make all the difference. It is within these nuances that Goa’s Portuguese influence reveals itself, with centuries of exchange shaping a style of cooking that feels both Indian and European. Vinegar, spice, seafood, and slow, deliberate preparation come together in deeply layered ways, defining what we know today as Goan-Portuguese cuisine.
A Glimpse of the Six-Course Experience
Join us for an evening that celebrates Goan-Portuguese cuisine through a six-course tasting menu designed by Chef Hemant Bhagwani. This experience explores the layered character of Goa, drawing from its diverse Portuguese culinary influence, while presenting a more refined, lesser-seen side of the region.
The evening begins with a Goan amuse-bouche and a celebratory splash, setting the tone for a progression of dishes that balance familiarity with reinterpretation. Highlights include shrimp balchao on Japanese toast and perfectly prepared lamb chops, each paired with wines selected to complement and elevate the flavors. Dessert pays homage to Portuguese pâtisserie and Goa’s love for coconut and spice, featuring a warm bebinca served with organic coconut ice cream, olive oil, and fleur de sel, followed by a selection of garam masala truffles.
This tasting menu is an invitation into a “hidden Goa” — a more nuanced, story-driven expression of the cuisine — designed for a sophisticated palate seeking something both transportive and unexpected.
